Eugenio Fernández Granell, nado na Coruña en 1912 e finado en Madrid en 2001, foi un pintor e escritor galego.

Nado na Coruña en 1912, estudou o bacharelato en Santiago de Compostela e trasladouse a Madrid a finais da década dos vinte, para continuar a súa vocación musical.

Acode a faladoiros no Madrid republicano e coñece as principais figuras literarias, inclusive a Valle-Inclán.

No período dereitista da República é detido, pasa varios meses no Cárcere Modelo de Madrid. Intégrase no POUM (Partido Obreiro de Unificación Marxista). Durante a contenda, como militante republicano, é destinado a Valencia e Cataluña. Máis tarde pasará á fronte de Aragón.

A derrota republicana na guerra civil lévao ao exilio. En Francia vive os campos de concentración, dalgúns dos cales conseguiu fuxir. Coñece a invasión nazi. Consegue viaxar a América na diáspora republicana, con recordos de escritores como Orwell, a quen coñeceu.

Unirase ás correntes surrealistas, e chegará a expor en Marx Ernst, Wifredo Lam e outros dese movemento, non as coñecía antes de concluír a guerra senón por referencias do ourensán Cándido Fernández Mazas. Vincúlase a eses modos de expresión plástica cando se atopa no Caribe, en Santo Domingo. Destaca axiña cando o seu primeiro gran cadro o adquire o Museo de Arte Moderna de Nova York. Coñece os grandes surrealistas franceses, incluído o «papa» André Breton.

A ditadura do xeneral Rafael Leónidas Trujillo fai que cambie de illa, e marcha a Porto Rico, onde establece contactos con intelectuais exiliados, como Juan Ramón Jiménez, Federico de Onis, Américo Castro. Novo salto, aos Estados Unidos; en concreto a Nova York, onde é profesor algúns anos, ata xubilarse como emérito do Brooklin College, tras doutorarse.

Algunhas das súas obras literarias reedítanse en España, como «O que sucedeu...», que obtivera o premio Don Quixote en 1967. Regresa con fama ben asentada de pintor, e as súas exposicións sucédense en España, con grandes eloxios da crítica. Exposicións monumentais da súa obra son as que se realizan na Coruña e no Centro Cultural de Caixavigo. A súa obra está en museos de todo o mundo. Garda escritos e testemuños de André Breton, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Jorge Guillén, Miró e Pablo Neruda.

Eugenio Fernández Granell falece en Madrid en outubro de 2001. A Xunta de Galicia concédelle a título póstumo a Medalla de Ouro de Galiza 2001 pola súa traxectoria no mundo das artes.
